Proxmox VE 9: What's New for Administrators

Proxmox VE 9 is the platform’s twentieth-anniversary release, and it is a more consequential one than the version number suggests. Under the hood the base operating system, the default storage stack and several of the most-used workflows all change at once. Here is what we now teach as the standard, and what you should plan for.

The Debian 13 base

Proxmox VE 9 moves the platform onto Debian 13 “Trixie” with a 6.14-series kernel. For most teams the practical impact is newer drivers, better support for current server hardware, and a longer security window. As with the 7-to-8 jump, do not treat this as a routine apt upgrade. Run the official pve8to9 check script first, snapshot critical guests, and rehearse the migration on a non-production cluster before you touch production.

Ceph Squid as the default

New Ceph installs in Proxmox VE 9 land on Ceph Squid (19.2), and the Reef-to-Squid upgrade path is now well documented. Squid is a mature release, but it also has a defined support horizon — patches run out on 19 September 2026 — so if you are still on Reef, plan the upgrade this quarter rather than discovering the deadline by accident.

Storage, SDN and networking

Storage management continues to mature, with clearer feedback on thin-provisioned volumes and smoother ZFS and Ceph integration. On the networking side, the software-defined stack is now genuinely usable for multi-tenant setups: VLAN and VXLAN zones are easier to reason about, and 9.1 added real SDN monitoring so you can see what the overlay is doing instead of trusting it blindly.

The 9.1 follow-up

Proxmox VE 9.1, released in November 2025, built on the base in ways that matter to operations teams. LXC containers can now be created directly from OCI images, virtual TPM state can be snapshotted alongside the guest, and nested-virtualisation CPU features are controllable at a finer granularity. None of these is a headline rewrite — which is exactly what a production platform should deliver.

Our recommendation

The value in Proxmox VE 9 is not one big feature; it is a long list of compounding improvements that make the platform more predictable to operate. The main risk in any major upgrade is the unverified assumption that it will probably work. Run the pre-flight checks, rehearse, and only then schedule the window.
